Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is offered at two tiers, and the choice affects both the grade you can get and your options for A Level. Here's how to decide.

The key differences

CoreExtended
Grades availableC to GA* to E
ContentCore syllabus onlyCore plus extra topics
DifficultyMore straightforward questionsLonger, multi-step problems
Best forStudents who need a secure passStudents aiming for A*–B or A Level sciences

What Extended adds

  • Harder algebra: quadratic equations and inequalities, algebraic fractions, changing the subject of complex formulas.
  • Functions: composite and inverse functions.
  • Further graphs, including gradients of curves.
  • Vectors and more advanced geometry and trigonometry, including the sine and cosine rules in any triangle.
  • More challenging probability and statistics questions.

Choose Extended if…

  • You want an A* , A or B.
  • You plan to take A Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics or Computer Science.
  • You're currently scoring around 50% or more on Extended past papers.

Choose Core if…

  • Your goal is a secure C, and Maths isn't needed for your next steps.
  • You're consistently scoring below 35% on Extended papers close to the exam, and there isn't time to close the gap.

What about O Level?

Cambridge O Level Mathematics (4024) has no tiers. Its content is close to IGCSE Extended, so O Level students should prepare at Extended level. See our O Level vs IGCSE guide for the full comparison.

Getting ready for Extended

Our Maths tutors regularly help students move from Core to Extended in a single term by teaching the extra topics first and then drilling past paper questions. Additional Mathematics is also a strong choice for students planning A Level Maths.

Frequently asked questions

01

What is the highest grade in IGCSE Maths Core?

The highest grade available on Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Core is C (or its equivalent on the 9–1 scale).

Can I switch from Core to Extended?

Yes, usually until your school submits exam entries. Students who switch need to cover the extra Extended content, such as further algebra, functions and vectors, which a tutor can help with in a few months.

03

Do I need Extended Maths for A Level Maths?

Almost always, yes. Most schools require an A or B in Extended Maths, and A Level Maths assumes the Extended content.
