Our approach

How we teach Additional Mathematics

Additional Maths catches many strong students off guard. We teach it as preparation for A Level: precise algebra, calculus from first principles, and the multi-step questions that make up the top grades.

Additional Maths depends on fluent algebra as well as new ideas. Connect functions, gradients and calculus so a question becomes a sequence of decisions instead of a formula to guess.

Topics covered

  • Functions & quadratics
  • Logarithms & exponentials
  • Trigonometric identities
  • Differentiation & integration
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Permutations & combinations
  • Series & binomial expansion

Try a practice question

Find a stationary point

An original learning exercise, not an official exam question.

For y = x² − 6x + 5, find the stationary point and determine its nature.

Show the worked answer
  1. Differentiate: dy/dx = 2x − 6.
  2. Set the gradient to zero: 2x − 6 = 0, so x = 3.
  3. Substitute into y: 9 − 18 + 5 = −4. The second derivative is 2, which is positive.

The stationary point is (3, −4), and it is a minimum.

Common mistake: A zero gradient gives the x-coordinate; substitute into the original function to find y and check the nature separately.
