Our approach

How we teach Biology

Biology rewards precise wording. Our tutors teach the content through diagrams and case studies, and show you the exact keywords mark schemes look for, so your answers pick up every available mark.

Use diagrams and precise explanations to connect biological processes. Practise answering the question asked, then use data to support a conclusion rather than repeating a memorised paragraph.

Topics covered

  • Cells & transport
  • Biological molecules & enzymes
  • Human physiology
  • Plant biology
  • Genetics & inheritance
  • Ecology & the environment
  • Experimental skills

Calculate percentage change in mass

An original learning exercise, not an official exam question.

A potato cylinder has a mass of 4.0 g before immersion in a solution and 4.6 g afterwards. Calculate the percentage increase in mass.

Show the worked answer
  1. Find the change: 4.6 − 4.0 = 0.6 g.
  2. Divide by the initial mass: 0.6 ÷ 4.0 = 0.15.
  3. Multiply by 100 to express the change as a percentage.

The mass increased by 15%. A separate explanation question would require you to discuss water movement by osmosis.

Common mistake: Use the initial mass as the denominator. Keep the calculation separate from the explanation of the biological process.
