Our approach

How we teach English

Strong English raises grades in every other subject. Our English tutors work on comprehension, summary, directed and creative writing, and literary analysis, and give detailed feedback on every piece you write.

Identify audience, purpose and form before writing. Reading a model is useful, but revising your own paragraph makes the choices about tone, evidence and organisation concrete.

Topics covered

  • Reading comprehension
  • Summary writing
  • Directed writing
  • Descriptive & narrative composition
  • Argumentative writing
  • Literature analysis
  • Speaking & listening

Try a practice question

Make a persuasive point specific

An original learning exercise, not an official exam question.

Improve this sentence for a letter to a headteacher requesting a lunchtime reading club: ‘A reading club would be good and everyone would like it.’

Show the worked answer
  1. Replace the vague word ‘good’ with a concrete benefit.
  2. Avoid claiming to know what every student wants.
  3. Suggest a practical arrangement suited to the audience.

‘A weekly lunchtime reading club would give interested students a quiet place to discuss books; a four-week trial could help us assess demand.’

Common mistake: Formal writing does not need complicated vocabulary. A precise, supported request is more persuasive than an exaggerated claim.
