Our approach

How we teach Economics

Economics grades depend on analysis and evaluation, not memorised definitions. We teach each diagram until you can draw and explain it, then practise data-response and essay questions with feedback against the mark scheme.

Build a chain from a change in conditions to its economic consequences. Distinguish a definition, an explanation and an evaluation, and use the question's context throughout.

Topics covered

  • Demand, supply & markets
  • Market failure
  • Macroeconomic objectives
  • Fiscal & monetary policy
  • International trade
  • Development economics
  • Essay & data-response technique

Interpret price elasticity of demand

An original learning exercise, not an official exam question.

Price rises by 10% and quantity demanded falls by 5%. Calculate price elasticity of demand using these percentage changes.

Show the worked answer
  1. Use percentage change in quantity demanded ÷ percentage change in price.
  2. Calculate −5 ÷ 10 = −0.5.
  3. The magnitude is 0.5, which is less than 1.

PED is −0.5 (magnitude 0.5), so demand is price inelastic over this change.

Common mistake: Do not reverse the fraction. Explain the magnitude and follow your course's convention for presenting the sign.
