Our approach

How we teach Computer Science

Computer Science combines theory and coding. We cover data representation, hardware and networks, then build real problem-solving skill through pseudocode, trace tables and Python programming practice.

Move from reading code to predicting and explaining its behaviour. Trace a small example, test boundary values and then write an algorithm that meets the stated requirements.

Topics covered

  • Data representation
  • Hardware & networks
  • Algorithms & pseudocode
  • Programming (Python)
  • Databases & SQL
  • Logic gates
  • Pre-release & problem solving

Trace a running total and count

An original learning exercise, not an official exam question.

Start Total and Count at 0. For each score in 40, 50, 75, add the score to Total and increase Count if the score is at least 50. Find the final values.

Show the worked answer
  1. After 40: Total = 40 and Count = 0.
  2. After 50: Total = 90 and Count = 1.
  3. After 75: Total = 165 and Count = 2.

Total = 165 and Count = 2. The score of exactly 50 is included.

Common mistake: Resetting Total inside the loop loses earlier scores. Using ‘greater than 50’ instead of ‘at least 50’ misses the boundary case.
